American Studies at Lee College

American Studies is a combination of
american lit in American history. So it tends to interweave literature, history,
politics, art, criticism and then work with them to come to a deeper
understanding about concepts and also about problems and solutions. So what we seek to do in American Studies is have the students look for connections across
text and then also contextualize historically. A normal class what we
would usually do if there’d be much more lecture. In American Studies we try to
have more discussion. They do do some lecturing but it’s it’s I would say it’s
kind of a minimalist type approach to that because they want the students to
flesh out the ideas and to think about what they’re saying what they’re reading
what the what they’re looking at. They draw the students into discussion so
it’s more of a Socratic method where there’s there’s open discussion and
there may even be difference of opinion but it’s a safe place to have that
difference of opinion. We may be asking questions but what we’re trying to
generate is conversation and debate. You know you’re having a good class when the
instructors are also learning. I would highly recommend it because number one
the instructors they are what makes the class, they’re very approachable. I’ll
probably enjoyed the instructors the mosts. They made the class comfortable
and entertaining enough or interesting enough that most of my classmates I
think look forward coming to that class. What Dr. Miller and I do in this class
is provide the students an opportunity in a platform in which they can explore
that they might not have traditionally been able to explore outside of the
classroom. The point of the class not just to impart information but for us to
collectively seek truth with all of this in a sense being open to you inside. I
never really thought about how history and society and the arts all play a part
in affecting each other. I believe that I came out of the class looking at things
differently.
