CHINA voiced the US Navy’s approach to the artificial island

China May 25 warns that the United States
could seriously disrupt negotiations between claimants in the South China Sea. This warning came after news of an American
warship moving within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island that China illegally
imbibed in Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands of Vietnam. Spokesman Lu Kang said China urged the United
States to correct mistakes and avoid further patrols, Reuters news agency quoted Reuters
as speaking at a Foreign Ministry news conference. Lu Kang also said such American actions are
very likely to lead to unforeseen events in the sea and in the air. Earlier, on May 24, US officials asked not
to be named, telling Reuters that the USS Dewey had moved to Mischief Reef in the Spratlys
in Vietnam at a range of less than 12 nautical miles . Since the arrival of US President Donald Trump,
this is the first time an American warship has challenged such claims against China’s
unfounded claims to the waters. The US calls such moves as “maritime freedoms”.
This move comes amid President Trump seeking China’s cooperation to curb North Korea’s
nuclear and missile programs. Chinese troops on May 25 also spoke out about
the incident. Speaking at a monthly press conference in Beijing, Chinese defense ministry
spokesman Ren Guoqiang said the Chinese warship had warned the warship had to leave the 12
nautical miles from the artificial island that the warship had left. liver. Mr Ren said China had expressed strong opposition
to the US on the patrol and warned that such moves would not be conducive to peace and
stability in the South China Sea.
