Former Sailor Discusses Lessons He Learned in the Navy

“I’M RETIRED REAR ADMIRAL JOHN ROBERTI.” MUSIC PLAYING “I CURRENTLY HAVE A POSITION AS A VICE PRESIDENT
WITH CUBIC DEFENSE APPLICATIONS FOR WASHINGTON D.C. OPERATIONS. I WENT FROM, YOU KNOW, A
YOUNG COLLEGE GRADUATE. I’D BEEN IN THE NAVY ALL OF ABOUT 10 DAYS TO HAVING A DIVISION
OFFICER AND BEING RESPONSIBLE AS A DIVISION OFFICER, AND LEARNING LEADERSHIP FROM MY MENTORS
ON THE SHIP, FROM THE SENIOR ENLISTED, AND FROM THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED FOR ME TOO.” MUSIC PLAYING “ALL THE SERVICES HAVE AN EDUCATION PATHWAY
FOR OFFICERS THROUGH THEIR CAREER, THE NAVY’S IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER SERVICES
AND YOU GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO WAR COLLEGE AT SOME POINT DURING YOUR CAREER, IF YOU SO
DESIRE AND THE TIMING IS RIGHT. SO, I HAD THE CHANCE TO GO TO NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND AND
GET MY MASTERS DEGREE IN NATIONAL SECURITY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS. OBVIOUSLY, I WORK
IN THE DEFENSE INDUSTRY AND YOU WOULD THINK THAT THERE’S A NATURAL MATCH THERE BUT BUSINESS
IS DIFFERENT. PROFIT AND LOSS AND BOTTOM LINE IS DIFFERENT THAN WORKING IN GOVERNMENT, WORKING
IN THE MILITARY IN PARTICULAR, BUT THE SKILLS THAT I LEARNED AS A LEADER AND THE LEADERSHIP
SKILLS YOU GET FROM THAT, THE MANAGEMENT SKILLS, THE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS, AND PARTICULARLY
THE STRATEGIC PLANNING SKILLS ON HOW TO, HOW TO DEFINE WHAT AN ORGANIZATION DESIRES TO
LOOK LIKE. HOW TO DEFINE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES, HOW TO SIT DOWN AND PLAN ON HOW YOU’RE GOING
TO GET FROM WHERE YOU ARE TO WHERE YOU’RE GOING. THOSE THINGS, I STILL USE EVERY SINGLE
DAY IN MY CURRENT JOB.”
