Happy 244th Birthday, Navy

Happy 244th Birthday, Navy

I graduated from high school [at] 18 and,
um, jobs were hard to find. I, uh, wanted to go to college and I hadn’t,
um, saved enough on my own. When I joined the Navy I wanted to be a Seabee. In 1967, just—uh…off the coast of Nam, we were gettin’ ready for an air strike and that’s when, uh, a zoomie rocket mis-misfired and hit
John McCain’s plane. I went to Melbourne, Australia twice. We escorted, uh, the 1956 Olympics. We escorted the athletes to Melbourne. [My] first underway. That’s the first time you take the ship to
sea and command of it. I had not had a previous underway. Uh…we didn’t want to give the other guy
a chance to screw it up. So [LAUGHTER], so he told me I’m…I’m counting
on you to do better than a mule. I can put a mule in there and do better than
that guy did. On thing they told us: Never volunteer for
nothing. But I volunteered for Vietnam. I would take advantage of any benefits that
came my way. Uh…If it was a good deal I would—I would
take it. I’d tell ’em to keep their mouth shut. Ya know? And listen before you get your mouth going. Do what you can and, uh, and if they offer
something and you can do it— you think you can do it, and you have the skill…Go for it. Go for it! The Navy is a good thing for you. Happy birthday to the navy. Happy Birthday Navy! Go Navy! Well I’d rather say, “Beat Army!” [LAUGHTER] Go Navy!
