Heroes Among Us: U.S. Navy Veteran Mathew “Whiz” Buckley


CORPORATE CAMPUS IN AUSTIN. NOW TO AN ALL NEW HERO AMONG US, YOU WILL ONLY SEE RIGHT HERE ON CBS4, WE PUT THE SPOTLIGHT ON A HERO AMONG US, MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE GONE BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY FOR OUR COUNTRY. TODAY WE ARE MEETING U.S. NAVY VETERAN MATTHEW WAS BUCKLEY WHO SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY FROM 1991 TO 2000, AND THE RESERVES UNTIL 2006. BORN ON THE BEACH WITH A LOVE FOR AVIATION, LIEUTENANT BUCKLEY SAID THE NAVY WAS A PERFECT COMBINATION FOR HIM. ALWAYS WANTING TO SERVE HIS COUNTRY, HE ENLISTED AND FLEW THE F-18 HORNET FOR 15 YEARS, GRADUATING FROM THE NAVY’S PRIVATE ACADEMY ALSO KNOWN AS TOP GUN. HE DID TO COMBAT DEPLOYMENTS ON BOARD THE ABRAHAM LINCOLN AT KITTY HAWK, AND THROUGH 44 COMBAT SORTIES OVER IRAQ IN SUPPORT OF OPERATION SOUTHERN WATCH. THE HARDEST PART IS A FIGHTER PILOT WAS THE LANDING BACK ABOVE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER. DURING THE DAY, IT’S INSANE AT NIGHT IT BORDERS ON TERROR. THERE ARE MEN AND WOMEN OUT THERE DOING SERIOUS STUFF TO KEEP US SAFE. I’M PROUD I WAS INVOLVED IN A TRADITION WHICH CONTINUES. LIEUTENANT MATTHEW BUCKLEY WAS HONORED AT A RECENT PANTHERS GAME WITH A STANDING OVATION. WITH HIS FAMILY BY HIS SIDE, THIS EMOTIONAL FIGHTER PILOT STOOD AND THANKED THE CROWD FOR
