Local man returns home with Navy Commodores

AND I’M MAGGIE SMOLKA. A LOT OF KIDS DREAM OF GROWING UP, GETTING A COOL JOB, AND COMING BACK TO THEIR HOME- TOWN… (KC) FOR AN AREA MAN, THAT DREAM BECAME A REALITY LAST NIGHT. IT WAS A FULL HOUSE AS THE US JAZZ BAND — THE NAVY COMMODORES — MADE A STOP IN HOLLIDAYSBURG. AS THE GROUP RETURNED SO DID MATTHEW NEFF. NEFF GRADUATED FROM HOLLIDAYSBURG HIGH IN 1987. FIVE YEARS LATER — IN 1992 — HE ENLISTED IN THE NAVY AND ITS CONCERT BAND — BUT SWITCHED TO THE JAZZ BAND TEN YEARS AGO. NOW THAT HE’S RETIRING — NEFF SAYS HE’S REMINDED OF ALL THE SPECIAL MOMENTS THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER WHICH HAS SPANNED NEARLY THREE DECADES. “I’ve had a great career actually getting out and meeting the public and going to places that you may not ever choose to visit or to vacation there. we’ve had the opportunity to pull up and meet the citizens and the veterans and potential recruits and just represent the navy. it’s been a lot of fun.” (KC) NEFF SAYS HE WILL CONTINUE PLAYING WITH A NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY ONCE THE TOUR IS FINISHED. (KC) A COOL EXPERIENCE FOR HIM I’M SURE. (MAGGIE)
