Making a RAILGUN and then TESTING it!


Hey guys in case you didn’t know the US Navy has been developing an electromagnetic railgun for the past decade and it’s absolutely incredible It’s a highly futuristic weapon that seems straight out of science fiction Using only electricity, it can accelerate a projectile to speeds of Mach 6. That’s over 7400 km/h! Plus it has a range of over a hundred and sixty kilometers! Plus if you use my link in the description below and are one of the first 300 viewers to use it you’ll get an awesome bonus, which will give you a huge head start in the game But more on that later, in the meantime, let’s start building a railgun Alright, so before we build a railgun, Let’s talk about how a railgun actually works You see a railgun converts electrical power into kinetic energy by creating a magnetic field that can accelerate a projectile Here’s the diagram showing how that works Now, the factor that determines how powerful a railgun is, is how much current you can push through those rails For a more detailed explanation on how rail guns work I’d recommend checking out electrogoBoom’s video right here So the question is how do we build a power supply that can provide enough current to make a powerful railgun? Most of the time we use lithium polymer batteries for our projects and that’s because they have some of the highest energy densities available in battery form, the problem is they can’t actually put out that much current. For that you need a capacitor which can discharge huge amounts of current in a really short amount of time. In fact, we’ve already had a lot of fun with these capacitors with Thor’s hammer! Ian: how to place a capacitor inside of Thor’s hammer And it fits pretty good. That’s loud! As you can see it packs quite a punch Now one capacitor isn’t enough. We’re going to use 16 Thats big! How heavy is this? So you discharged it right? All right you one upped me over the flamethrower To start you have to turn the pressure on low, and we should probably go downstairs. Bogdan: Alright, so we are going to test how long its going to take for this charger to charge up our capacitor bank.   1. U missed such an easy mod… Cryo cool the fucker. Cut your r on the rails, scew practical just run ln in a tube each side vent it at the end maybe loop back on itself once or 2x. U probably know where to get it and it's not very expensive. Better yet, loop both ends back to the bolt end and apply a lighter flame to the tubes on entry. Should cause rapid expansion ie replace the compressed gas need

Would be a nice experiment to see how powerful the full charge is at lower temperatures (on the rail itself) because magnetic fields and electrical fields face less resistance at colder temperatures, that might have a double-whammy effect on the rail gun as it uses both… why not take that thing out in the north Winnipeg Winter lol

    A real rail gun has muzzle velocity of 2520 m/s (8270 ft/s).
    I am estimating from the video that they reached muzzle velocity of 2 m/s.

  11. you reach a certain point with portable coil guns where you'd just get better results if you just wor a backpack of capacitors and slung a chain connected to them at your enemy.

  13. These guys are so full of shit, they combined a bunch of capacitors and other electronic components with a paintball gun, shot a metal ball thru it and claimed they built a rail gun. If the US government with all of its money and technology can't seem to make railgun technology work right, what chance do these guys have, I mean seriously, come on. These guys are scumbags for trying to pull the wool over people's eyes, I just hope too many people don't actually fall for it.

    What if a transformer was used which can deliver very high current such as 150A?

  21. If I was in the hacksmith I wouldn't be much help on the contraption itself but I would work on frames and ideas.

  25. The diagram….. Are you sure it's 400 volts 36 FARADs? Because if it was 36F then it would store approximately 2880kj energy? 288 times more than styropyro's ruby laser cap bank? And if you were using standard 400v 4700uf capacitors you would need 7660 of them?
