Master of Arts in Asian Studies

(slow violin music) – This is a great time now to get a degree in Asian studies. As the world is getting
more and more globalized, you know, it creates a
lot of opportunities, at the same time challenges. – Asian cultures are having more and more of an
influence internationally, whether it’s in business,
international relations, or pop culture and entertainment. – We are one of the earliest
programs in Asian studies in this country. – Asian studies at Seton Hall, it was a establishing as in our early as 1951. – I ultimately chose Seton Hall University because they offered courses in Japan as well as China. And they also did all of Asia. So I could focus on two major areas, but also get a little
bit of Korea and Vietnam and Southeast Asia as well. – The Asian studies
program here at Seton Hall has so many various courses that cover history, business, literature, film. – And especially the very fantastic language training programs. – We have three different tracks. First of all, we have area studies track. And second, we have a teaching track, which has a very long, long history. And also, we have a joint degree program in between Asian studies and a diplomacy. – I became interested in the relations China started having with African nations, and I thought by putting
those two together, I can contribute to the conversation that was happening around
those relationship. – One of the impressive
features of the faculty in the graduate program is that we’re a very international group. So we have faculty from
the U.S., from China, from Hong Kong, from Japan. – I was the first Chinese-American in the education field to receive that. Past recipients include
several U.S. presidents and Nobel Prize winners. The medal is for giving that
to outstanding Americans who have made contributions
to this country. – I can walk into the program office pretty much at any time and there’s always an open door. So I can talk to Dr. Rice or Dr. Osuka about any needs that I may have. – They were incredibly encouraging from the minute I got here, not only about what I was learning, but what my goals were,
how I was getting there. – We have a lot of students who had internships in
Manhattan at The Japan Society, The Metropolitan Museum of
Art, The China Institute, The Asia Society, The U.N. – This summer, I have the
opportunity of going to China to work in the Librarian Consulate. And I feel that I can take the knowledge that I’ve gotten to be more open to conversations that’s being had whiles I’m in China at our embassy. – My career goal is to be
a teacher in the future, and I think Asian study program gave me a great chance to improve my ability. – I think if someone
were pursuing a degree in Asian studies, they should choose Seton Hall ’cause the school offers
a lot of opportunities. – If you love learning about
the language, the culture, definitely come and study. If you wanna combine
it with something else, definitely come here and study. – If you are interested in
Asian study or Asian culture or want to teach Asian language like me, Seton Hall University
will be a great choice. (speaks in foreign language) (upbeat guitar music)
