Military Programs San Diego Resounding Joy Musical Outreach to USMC School of Infantry-West

My name is Barbara Reuer, I’m the executive
director of resounding joy. Resounding joy is a non-profit organization that was started
in the year 2005 and we started it to bring community and faith based organizations together
to train volunteers to bring supportive music to individuals that are home bound or shut
in. I saw a need when I realized that a lot of individuals that are home bound or shut
in aren’t getting seen. And also as music therapists we’re looking at older adult facilities
we realized that there was a huge need for visits and older adults facilities as well.
We know that music is very stimulating and changes the environment for that person. Music
many times will take individuals down memory road it gives them a chance to talk about
the old times and also its a diversion from there current environment. We were very interested in
first of all supporting the military; we’re very interested in developing programs that
are geared into the military families and to individuals that might have traumatic brain
injury or spinal chord injury let alone just bringing support to those who might have even
post traumatic stress when they come back. I really tired to promote the fun of music
because really intrinsically thats what it is and you kinda have to be a little silly sometimes some of the best facilitators are just incredibly ebullient type of people where there just really reach out and
they’re able to bring people in just through their personality but you know you just do it in small steps we talk about in music therapy the iso principal that means that we like to start where the client is so if the only thing they feel comfortable with at first is just taking a mallet and
going shave and a hair cut six bits and thats how we start them out and we always try to consider
what they’re used to in terms of the music they like and their personal history. Motivation of
a facilitator often times is to facilitate but not create to help the individuals in
the group actually create their own music. We’re so glad to be here. Were playing weapons
of mass instruction right now. Weapons of mass instruction. There drums. Weapons of mass and instruction.Thats how you get motivated. Motivated! That heartbeat, I mean whats at the center of our
bodies and all of the things that go on in our bodies and mind are rhythmical in a way, so
its not surprising that we’re able to create that through music fairly easily and its something
that we’ve been doing for centuries it was just a matter of kinda opening that part of us up
and allowing it to come out and be heard.
