Navy Updates Bystander Training

WELCOME TO ALL HANDS UPDATE, I’M PETTY OFFICER
IAN COTTER. YOU’VE GIVEN THE FEEDBACK AND NOW NAVY LEADERS
HAVE LISTENED. AT ALL HANDS CALLS THROUGHOUT THE NAVY, SAILORS
REPORTED THAT, POWER-POINT DRIVEN TRAINING ISN’T EFFECTIVE. SAILOR PARTICIPATION IS CRUCIAL TO MAKING
SURE SHIPMATES ARE TAKING CARE OF EACH OTHER. THE NEW BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TRAINING IS
A DIRECT RESULT OF SAILOR FEEDBACK — MORE INTERACTIVE, HANDS-ON TRAINING. IT WILL BE SIMILAR TO OTHER INTERACTIVE NAVY
TRAINING AND LED BY YOUR PEERS IN GROUPS OF NO MORE THAN 30 SAILORS. BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TRAINING IS OFTEN ASSOCIATED
WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION TRAINING, BUT THIS ONE GOES BEYOND STOPPING POTENTIAL SEXUAL
ASSAULT. IT WILL INCLUDE SEVERAL DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIORS
LIKE ALCOHOL ABUSE, HAZING, HARASSMENT AND SUICIDE. THE NEW TRAINING WILL BE INTRODUCED TO SAILORS
LATER THIS FALL AND MUST BE COMPLETED BY SEPTEMBER 2015.
