Sasebo Chiefs, Chief Selectees Remember 9/11 Attacks

September 11, 2001, is a day that is remembered
by many Sailors. “I was at my house in Hawaii when I got the
phone call. A friend of mine said, ‘Hey, turn on the news’. I saw one plane hit the World
Trade Center followed by the second one and I couldn’t believe it. I was in awe.” “I was in my friend’s house in Misawa, Japan.
The story came on the news so we started watching the news. It was on Japanese TV first, then
we switched and put it onto AFN actually and started watching it from there.” Some Sailors can still recall how they felt
on that day. “We saw the second plane hit as the media
coverage actually captured that and it was like, ‘Oh my goodness, America is under attack.’
It was a real somber situation.” “I was very angry. I was upset. Why would
anybody do this? Then, I wanted to go ahead and defend our nation.” To remember the events and how america responded,
Chief Petty Officers joined with the CPO selects in a ceremony outside CFAS headquarters. “Through these tragic events, we came together
as a nation and we’re still together as a nation, proving to the world that you may
have hit us, you might have knocked us down but we’re getting up, and we’re going to stay
up.” The Chief selectees read about those who were
lost in the attacks and told their own personal stories about that day. “For me, it’s a humbling experience and it’s
also a privilege to be able to be a part of it because people, from this day forward,
will always remember it.” The Ceremony was a reminder, for the chiefs,
of why they joined the navy. “I hope it guides us all to remember why we
do what we do. Why we stand up and say that enlistment oath and also why we say the Sailor’s
Creed every day.” The ceremony showed that even though the attacks
of September 11th still haunt Sailors, they continue to be strong together. Seaman andrew
