United States Naval Academy Museum Volunteers Help Preserve Naval History with Ship Models

THE MUSEUM AT THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
BUILDS AND MAINTAINS OVER 200 SHIP MODELS THAT ARE THEN LENT OUT TO NAVAL MUSEUMS ACROSS
THE COUNTRY TO HELP EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE
IMPORTANCE OF EACH VESSEL AND THE NAVY’S MISSION. “YEA, WE CERTAINLY HOPE THEY’LL LOOK BACK
INTO THE HISTORICAL ASPECT OF THESE MODELS AND SAY HEY THIS WAS, YOU KNOW, JOHN PAUL
JONES’ SHIP WHETHER IT WAS THE BONHOMME RICHARD OR, YOU
KNOW, OLIVER HAZARD PERRY DURING THE WAR OF 1812 LOOKING AT THE NIAGARA AND GO BACK AND
LOOK AND SEE WHAT THESE GUYS ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED,
THESE FAMOUS NAVY, YOU KNOW, NAVAL LEADERS AND HOPEFULLY IT IS AN INSPIRATION TO THEM
TO SAY HEY, YOU KNOW, THEY CAN GO BACK AND LOOK AT THAT
HISTORY AND SAY YEA BOY I WANT TO EMMULATE THIS TYPE OF LEADERSHIP.” VOLUNTEERS GIVE THEIR TIME AT THE ACADEMY
TWICE A WEEK TO WORK ON THESE CRAFTS, PRESERVING NAVAL HISTORY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. “IF IT’S NOT TO WORN OUT AN EXPRESSION, I
WAS NOT IN THE SERVICE MYSELF THIS IS MY WAY OF GIVING BACK AND SAYING THANKS AND USING
THE GOD GIVEN TALENTS THAT I HAVE IN ORDER TO SHOW
YOUNG SAILORS AND THE PUBLIC THAT SEE THESE PROJECTS HOW WORTHWHILE OUR PAST HAS BEEN.” MUSEUM STAFF SAID THE VOLUNTEERS PLAY AN IMPORTANT
ROLE AT THE MUSEUM AND ARE VERY DEDICATED TO PRESERVING AND BUILDING THE MODELS. “WE ACTUALLY, I’VE GOT A GREAT GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS
HERE. THEY’RE HERE EVERY THURSDAY AND EVERY SATURDAY. SO I HAVE THEM EIGHT DAYS A MONTH, AND I HAVE A TOTAL OF ANYWHERE FROM 15 TO
ABOUT 20 HERE AT A TIME ON THURSDAY EVENINGS AND ALSO ON SATURDAY MORNINGS.” FROM THE DEFENSE MEDIA ACTIVITY, I’M PETTY
OFFICER TONY ROSA.
