University of Montevallo Environmental Studies

(guitar music) The Environmental Studies program at the University of Montevallo is the first of its kind in public higher education in Alabama so it’s a really exciting, new, interdisciplinary program so what’s really special about it is students get to take classes all over campus in disciplines ranging from marketing and management to biology to philosophy and english to political science and history and in all of these classes they are looking at environmental challenges and issues and problems but they’re learning about the lenses and the expertise and the frameworks of all these different disciplines so students really get to develop this unique perspective on environmental problems and environmental problem solving. I chose the Environmental Studies major at the University of Montevallo because I knew it was more focused on social science and community organizing and outreach and I wanted to get that expertise rather than only the hard sciences but I liked that it was interdisciplinary and I would be able to work in all the departments of the university. One of the great things about the ES program here is that we get to do a lot of work, not just inside the classroom but working with the community so the Environmental Studies Capstone Project does a lot of work inside the City of Montevallo and so we get to work with talking with city leaders and the people here on campus that work at the physical plant and stuff like that and so it’s about a lot more than just having knowledge that’s academic but it’s knowledge that’s useful and that you can apply to make a positive change. The University of Montevallo has a lot of resources that support this program and make it a really good experience for students. We have the University Lake, we have Ebeneezer Swamp which is a gorgeous ecological resource that is owned by the university. We also just have a beautiful tree-filled campus that really reinforces the commitment to environmental protection here at the university so I think that the program has a really good fit here at the the university and so students can take advantage of all these resources to further their education and just be in a beautiful place. So far my favorite thing about Environmental Studies has been just how much we actually go outside and go into nature because it provides a more, like, personal experience with the teacher and you’re able to sit around with 10 to 12 people and just learn more about what you’re doing and having more hands on talk with the teacher. What’s really exciting about environmental studies is that the green economy is growing and so there are a lot of emerging jobs that will, not necessarily require an Environmental Studies degree, but they will require the types of skills that students will have from this program. I think Montevallo is the place to be for someone who cares about the environment because it’s not just about what you’re learning in the classroom, it’s not about having facts and statistics because I can throw those at you all day long but none of that really matters so much as what you can do with that knowledge. Montevallo gives you the kind of connections to chase your dreams and to make the world a better place and I think that that really matters. (soft music)
