USS Makin Island Returns from Deployment; U.S. Navy’s Supply Corps Celebrates 220th Birthday (HL 26)


WELCOME TO ALL HANDS UPDATE, I’M PETTY OFFICER JAMES STILIPEC. THESE ARE YOUR HEADLINES FROM AROUND THE FLEET. THE USS MAKIN ISLAND AMPHIBIOUS READY GROUP, OR ARG, AND 11TH MARINE EXPEDITIONARY UNIT, OR MEU, RETURNED TO SAN DIEGO FEBRUARY 25TH AFTER THEIR SEVEN-MONTH DEPLOYMENT. DURING THEIR DEPLOYMENT TO THE U.S. 5TH AND 7TH FLEET AREAS OF OPERATION, THE ARG AND MEU CONDUCTED AIR STRIKES AGAINST THE ISLAMIC STATE OF IRAQ AND THE LEVANT, AND PARTICIPATED IN EXERCISES COUGAR VOYAGE 14 AND RED REEF 15 WITH PARTNER NATIONS. THE UNITED STATES NAVY’S SUPPLY CORPS CELEBRATED THEIR 220TH BIRTHDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD. THE SUPPLY CORPS WAS ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED BY PRESIDENT GEORGE WASHINGTON TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL LOGISTICS FOR THE NAVY. TODAY’S SUPPLY OFFICERS ARE TRAINED IN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT, ACQUISITION MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONAL LOGISTICS. THERE ARE CURRENTLY MORE THAN 3,500 ACTIVE DUTY AND RESERVE SUPPLY CORPS OFFICERS PROVIDING THE SERVICES THAT KEEP THE NAVY RUNNING.
