Verizon Careers Insights: From the Navy to the Network

I’m Stacy McGarr and I’m currently the Director of Engineering for the East Coast. I was going to Youngstown State University for my associates degree at the time. I noticed that job posting
for an Associate Engineer at Verizon Wireless in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. And with such a reputable company
I thought, okay let’s try it. And that hiring manager
just saw something in me and he knew based on what I had learned in the military, I had the aptitude
to learn what they needed. One of the things that I
transferred from the military was they expect perfection and they expect accountability and they expect you
to have pride in what you do. Verizon gives me a lot of opportunities to
be able to go around and tell my story. Recently there was a career fair in
Washington D.C. for veterans. Verizon had a roundtable breakfast for women. We had three of us ladies and we introduced ourselves. We were all in different branches which was great. During our session was, you know, the opportunity to be able to say, look, okay you did
this in the military, you’re getting out. Here’s how it transitions to the civilian
world, especially within Verizon. One thing, I think, that sets Verizon apart,
especially when it comes to veterans is I think they’re looking for those soft skills
that they bring, that integrity, that hard work, dedication, accountability. You have something in there that the experience
you’ve learned will transfer in here. And then with myself, just being able to take
the skills that I’ve had and learn from the military and how I’ve used them here at Verizon,
and then be able to go to these career fairs or go to these military fairs and tell them,
you know, what they can do with the skills that they have that are so unique, that’s
going to transform them into leaders at Verizon.
