Veterans On Campus at TAMUK – Feature – (2018)

My name is Eloy Gamez. I served in the United States Marine Corp
from 2008 to 2012, deployed twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. My second semester I started it off as a workstudy
in the veterans affairs office, and just recently, I was blessed by this university to be offered
a Veteran Coordinator position for the office. Firstly, it’s a rewarding position because
I’m able to assist veterans and veteran dependents with their college career. So when it comes to benefits, I know that
in my personal experience, not much was told to me when I got out, so I’m able to share
my experience with anyone coming in. I was able to develop a really good rapport,
professional rapport with the professors here at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The classes were small, so they were able
to devote a lot of attention to me. That’s what encouraged me to continue my education. Training, again, much like education, is never
going to be done. There’s always something that you can learn. There’s always something that you can share. Don’t be afraid to learn. There’s a lot of opportunities available to
you. Opportunities that you’ve definitely earned
serving your country, so work with what you’ve got and make the best of it.
