Why Choose Labour Studies?

Labour Studies is a study of work and
employment from the perspective of working people and their organizations. SFU proudly offers the only Labour
Studies degree program in BC. Work impacts all of our lives, and we can’t
have more just and equal society without having decent work for all. The struggles of a hundred years ago are similar to the struggles today, because at the end of the day, it comes down to whether or not
working people have rights, whether they’re respected, and whether they have power. And understanding where that power came from, the history and the sacrifices
are went into earning that power, and how we’re going to keep and build that power going forward is critical to how 90% of the population, is actually gonna have a decent life. With a major in Labour
Studies students specialize in understanding the forces that will shape the future of work. Students gain an understanding of how social and economic inequality, worker action, technological
change, and migration impact labour markets today and in the future. Labour Studies is an interdisciplinary program, allowing you to explore your interests
in History, Political Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and much more. The degree offers plenty of opportunities for work experiences, through co-op positions and funded research projects. Through Labour Studies I really developed my critical thinking skills, and my collective bargaining skills, which have helped me in my work as a union activist. Having that concrete understanding of the labour movement, of the trade movement, of what precarious work means, Truly actually allowed me, and helped me get the jobs that I’ve had. Probably more than anything else.
